INDIAN FOREST SERVICE (IFS)

The Central Information Service (CIS) was renamed as Indian Information Service (IIS) during the year 1987 and the cadre controlling authority is Ministry of Information & Broadcasting with a cadre size of 489 posts. Originally this cadre was formed in 1960. The source of recruitment (in percentage) was by direct recruitment, 50% (through Civil Services examination conducted by UPSC) and by promotion, 50% (by promotion from eligible officers of senior grade of IIS Group B). There was no lateral entry.

Brief write up on the service outlining the main functions etc. including areas where interaction and coordination with other services is essential:

The District Forest Officer/Deputy Conservator of Forests main responsibilities are projection of forest and wildlife. In addition, he implements the various developmental schemes of state government and central schemes for conservation of forest and wildlife. He coordinates with various district level officers while implementing the various forestation and developmental scheme. His works depends on the efficiency of team work District Magistrate and Superintendent of Policy of the District.

The Conservator of Forests is mainly supervisory level officer and he is the controlling authority for District Forest Officer/Deputy Conservator of Forests. Generally 4-5 divisions are under administrative control of Conservator of Forests. The Chief Conservator of Forests is mainly the policy level officer and he conceives the various schemes and prepares the schemes for protection of forests and wildlife. He is the controlling officer for conservation of forests. He is a Regional Officer and technical Expert and Guides Conservator of Forests.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, he is a controlling officer of Chief Conservator of Forests. The state level project and policy formulation are done by him. He is the nodal officer for coordination between the various wings of the forest department in the state. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests is the apex level in hierarchy in the state and he is the overall in charge of Forest department in the state.
